Thank you for wanting to know about us. Since 1983 ActionCAD has been helping architects and engineers with their construction design projects. We are now helping them manage their BIM commitments. Whether it’s assessing BIM capability, achieving BIM compliance or gaining BIM certification, ActionCAD is giving businesses peace-of-mind and is ready to assist anyone who needs to adopt BIM in line with the UK Government’s mandate. We are The BIM Specialists.
Dimension Data Advanced Infrastructure (DDAI)
Over the past 30 years DDAI have successfully delivered data, ELV and M&E engineering design and installation services across many sectors including education, healthcare, student accommodation, shopping centres and more.
ActionCAD was hired to help DDAI implement BIM within the company and Rob was employed as the Information Manager.
A set of documents were produced that included a BIM manual and a set of policies, procedures and standards that DDAI have implemented allowing it to design and build mechanical and electrical systems under an in-house BIM regime and collaborate with other project stakeholders in a manner that is BIM compliant.
Fusion Building Systems
For more than 10 years Fusion Building Systems have been designing, manufacturing and erecting light gauge steel frames, wall panels and floor cassettes.
ActionCAD was hired to help Fusion complete a BIM gap analysis as the first step in becoming a BIM compliant business.
A survey of current design procedures was carried out leading to insights in the changes and investment required for Fusion to become fully compliant with Level 2 BIM methods of operation.
Here’s a little background about us and our business.
Our Story Starts With Sharon
I was taught draughtsmanship the old-school way, using pencil and ink on a drawing board, and after my initial training went to work in the Netherlands for an engineering firm. I spent five years developing and honing my skills, and also learnt how to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
When I returned to the UK, the country was in the early stages of its own CAD revolution, and I was ready to put my new skills to work. I established a computer aided draughting service called ActionCAD, and began teaching AutoCAD at various colleges across the North West of England.
I wanted to help drawing board veterans learn new skills so they could prolong their working lives, and I also wanted to inspire young people who were starting from scratch. Having worked in the days before CAD, I understood the problems some people face when converting to a different way of producing drawings. I also wanted to stress the importance of drawing office standards to those who did not have any engineering drawing experience.
As ActionCAD grew, I was joined by Rob who has engineering and science degrees, and in 2006 the business became a limited company. Although Building Information Modelling (BIM) was only being used in the USA at the time, Rob saw its potential as a way to help stakeholders share construction project data. He realised that it would result in more efficient building projects, reduce waste and increase competitiveness, and decided to integrate it into ActionCAD’s offering. Rob is now qualified as a BRE Certified BIM Professional.
